Spring / Summer 2008 A.U.O.C. SCHOLARHIP OFFER Friday, 5th of September, 2008 We are pleased to report that the AUOC body has made its final determination for our second offering of our scholarship program. A total of eight scholarship certificates have been awarded and mailed out as of today. All eight participants had extraordinary achievements and accomplishments in their academic studies thus far. Included are some excerpts from the essays received, which was to address the topic: What being an Assyrian means to you and what can be done to help preserve the Assyrian heritage and bring awareness of our nationality. The AUOC is honored to be a part of our scholar’s educational endeavors. Hopefully, with the further support of our community, future State Conventions and fundraisers, we will be able to make more significant contributions by way of scholarships to our Assyrian youth. We thank all applicants and we look forward to hearing of your great future!
Congratulations to all the Scholars awarded…
“George Bernard Shaw said that ‘those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it”. The richness of Assyrian heritage provides us with more than a few valuable life lessons. Most importantly it provides us with an identity linked to the sufferings and advancements of a determined and amazing group of people…….It is the responsibility of every Assyrian to make sure our legacy lives on, and it is especially time for Assyrian youth to step up and take an active role in the Assyrian community.” Written by: Laressa Bethishou of Santa Clarita – U.C. Los Angeles
“…Just as other minorities strive and thrive in the United States by establishing organizations and other ethnic functions, Assyrians must also put forth more efforts into gaining stronger recognition in our society, preserving our heritage by teaching our children over six thousand years worth of Assyrian history, maintaining ties to our heritage, and frequently conversing in our language at home…”. Written by: Ashley Simon, Massillon – U.C. San Diego
“…being Assyrian means being family. The belief of being one people, one nation; regardless of country, state, or city boundaries reaffirms being Assyrian to me.” Written by: Natalie Roweihab, West Hills – University of LaVerne
“…A culture teeming with bright, innovated, and intelligent populace is one that captures attention, honor and respect. One such generation is highly capable of making a difference and is far more likely to be able to live up to the name set by the same people who were once responsible for establishing a highly advanced education system during one of the earliest civilizations known to mankind.” Written by: Adrina Gabriel, Turlock - C.S.U. Stanislaus
“….if I were to choose among all the existing nationalities in the world, I would never choose anything but Assyrian because of my amazing history carved in stones and Bible, my rich language spoken by Christ, and my precious heritage, my Assyrian blood.” Written by: Ishtar Issa, Santa Clarita – U.C. Los Angeles
“…I am the strong and intelligent woman I am today because of my heritage. My parents have taught me that being Assyrian means having good morals, being strong, bright, open-minded and prideful in my culture. I would never turn my back on my heritage. I am proud to be Assyrian……” Written by: Sharokina Danipour, Santa Clarita – U.C. Los Angeles
